Didactic Training: A Mental Health Provider’s Role in Gender Affirming Care

Instructor: Lotus Đỗ

Lotus Đỗ (he/him/his) is a Licensed Therapist and Gender Specialist of Vietnamese descent and transgender lived experience. He has nearly a decade of experience specializing in treating Gender Dysphoria in co-occurrence with significant psychiatric conditions including PTSD, substance use and suicidality. In addition to providing direct clinical services to hundreds of children and their families, adults and seniors, Lotus has also helped build this country’s first Gender Surgery access and navigation program for low-income and uninsured adults, as well as many other Gender Clinics throughout California.

Course Description:
Many mental health providers are interested in working with clients struggling with Gender Dysphoria but reluctant due to lack of experience or clinical guidance on how to treat Gender Dysphoria. This course provides a comprehensive overview of Gender Dysphoria assessment, differential diagnosis and treatment options. This course also addresses a number of common co-occurring needs that individuals struggling with Gender Dysphoria face, including Eating and Feeding Disorders, substance use and suicidality. Participants will build practical clinical skills that will allow them to provide comprehensive, effective services to support individuals struggling with Gender Dysphoria.

Educational Goals:

  • Learn about the history of Transgender Medicine in the United States.
  • Differentiate between Gender Dysphoria as a diagnosis and gender dysphoria as a human experience.

Quantifiable Learning Goals:

  • Identify the 4 components of gender dysphoria as a human experience.
  • Identify at least 1 treatment option for each of the 4 components of gender dysphoria as a human experience.
  • Outline at least 1 treatment option for a common co-occurring psychiatric condition with Gender Dysphoria.
