DESCRIPTION

This interactive one-day training will examine factors in which people are born, work, live, play, pray and age known as social determinants of health (SDH) and how they relate to HIV-related disparities. Participants will examine social and structural factors like racism, gender identity, economic status, housing, education, and stigma that impact patients and communities in accessing HIV care and prevention services. Attendees will be introduced to approaches and strategies in which they will learn to identify and address the SDH in their communities, increase health equities and improve health outcomes for people with HIV.

OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Define social determinants of health
  • Describe the connection between HIV-related health disparities and social determinants of health
  • Describe at least one causal pathway a particular social determinant creates for accessing HIV care and prevention
  • Identify at least one strategy to address social determinants to promote HIV healthcare access with patients and communities

CEU Information:
This course meets the qualifications for 5.5 contact hours of continuing education credit for nurses as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # CPE 13741. Bay Area, North & Central Coast AIDS Education & Training Center is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. Bay Area North & Central Coast AIDS Education & Training Center maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. This course meets the qualifications for 5.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Provider # 133640. Any activities within the program that do not have instructional time are not offered for continuing education credit. Course completion certificates will be awarded upon completion of course evaluations. Documentation must be retained by the Participant for a period of four years after the conclusion of this program.
